Financial Education for Small Businesses

At Pathway Financial Education, we offer financial education for small businesses that is free and easily accessible. Through a hybrid teaching model offering both in-person classroom instruction and online education, we allow access to the program content at any time, from anywhere. Participants are required to complete a series of educational modules taught sequentially by subject matter experts representing some of the top businesses in the metropolitan area and beyond. Our curricula include the following and more:

  • Writing business plans and feasibility studies
  • Forming business entities
  • Raising capital and accessing financing
  • Managing finances and record keeping
  • Managing insurance and risk
  • Managing cashflow
  • Filing and planning taxes
  • Marketing and selling a business
  • Planning a sale or purchase of assets and succession planning

Participants are required to demonstrate proficiency in each module before advancing to the next. This helps to establish a basis of financial competency, financial literacy and a foundation on which to build skills.

Course Content

Our small business curriculum is divided into four modules consisting of in-person classroom and online instructions with additional course content offered in between classes.

Module 1

  • Understanding what it takes to start a business
  • Discussing the risks involved in starting a business
  • Learning how to put together a business plan and identifying needed resources
  • Learning basic business ownership terminologies
  • Reviewing and selecting types of business organizations
  • Organizing a business
  • Other legal considerations when starting a business

Module 2

  • Introducing lending institutions
  • Learning the basics of business financing
  • Understanding the loan process and terminologies
  • Identifying trends in businesses and common ratios used
  • Understanding and managing the cash flow cycle

Module 3

  • Learning basic accounting for small businesses including the following:
    • Budgeting
    • Bookkeeping
    • Financial statements
    • Recordkeeping
  • Managing tax obligations

Module 4

  • Identifying threats and risks to a business
  • Completing an evaluation of business risk
  • Understanding risk metrics and management controls
  • Learning the basics of business insurance
  • Creating a succession plan
  • Closing and selling a business
